Cross-Network Collaboration.
Supporting Educators. Empowering Students.

Our Mission

The Student Success Coach (SSC) Learning Network aims to advance educational equity in California by immersing Student Success Coaches in K-12 school communities and collaborating with teachers and administrators to provide holistic support, mentorship, and tutoring for diverse students in historically under-resourced communities.

About

The SSC Learning Network is a collaborative effort between eight community-based organizations across California, including City Year and California Volunteers, to support students and teachers and provide whole-child support in under-resourced schools across the state. Our network equips schools with highly trained, near-peer tutors and mentors on the ground, doing targeted interventions to advance students’ academic and social-emotional development.

We oversee a network of more than 500 Student Success Coaches, who serve full-time in California public schools in collaboration with teachers and administrators. By being fully immersed in school communities, we serve not only students, but teachers and administrators as well.

Our Impact

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of California students experienced significant learning loss and an abrupt disconnection from some of the most important socio-emotional and academic support systems in their young lives. For students from systemically under-resourced communities, the impact was particularly profound.

Policymakers at the State level recognized that students would need increased support as they returned to school and re-acclimated to a school environment. Thanks to their advocacy, Governor Newsom included  $15M in the  2021-22 California State Budget  for an AmeriCorps California Student Success Coach Grant Program. The funding led to a partnership between City Year, California Volunteers, and six other organizations to launch the Student Success Coach (SSC) Learning Network with the goal of providing additional support in schools where students have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the shift to remote learning.
